Yellow Jackets split doubleheader on Senior Night
Antwan Jones January 13, 2021

The girls’ varsity kicked off the doubleheader at Sprayberry between the Yellow Jackets and the South Cobb Eagles.

The Yellow Jackets looked to remain undefeated at home and increase their win streak to eight. The Eagles looked to end their losing streak with a win on the road.

Sprayberry started the first quarter in a full-court press to set the tone for the game. They applied pressure and forced turnovers to take an early lead. South Cobb struggled on both sides as they failed to score and play defense. Sprayberry, on the other hand, capitalized off South Cobb’s mistakes. The Yellow Jackets held a comfortable lead at the end of the first quarter, 25-7.

The Lady Jackets continued to dominate in the second quarter as they increased their lead. The Yellow Jackets’ relentless full-court pressure led to fast-break points. The Eagles did not have an answer on defense for the Yellow Jackets as they were scoring at will. The Yellow Jackets were up big to end the first half, 40-13.

South Cobb looked to erase the 27-point deficit they found themselves in, but their offensive woes continued. South Cobb failed to make their open shots.

Sprayberry continued to dominate in the second half as they cruised to a 66-36 win over the Eagles. Sprayberry improved to 10-2 while South Cobb fell to 2-10.  Sprayberry will look to continue their win streak to 9 in a row as they will play Osborne this Friday.

In the boy’s game, Sprayberry looked to complete the sweep at home.

South Cobb started the game with something to prove as they jumped out to an early 14-2 lead in the first few minutes of the quarter. Sprayberry’s lackluster energy was why they found themselves trailing by double digits midway through the first quarter. Sprayberry picked up the pace and intensity as they tried to close out the quarter strong. South Cobb stopped any momentum Sprayberry had with a buzzer-beater field goal to end the first quarter. South Cobb had a 10-point lead after the first, 24-14.

The Eagle’s height started to play a factor as they controlled the rebounding on offense and defense. The Eagle’s offense could do no wrong in the second as they scored 27. The Yellow Jackets could not slow down the Eagle’s offense. The Yellow Jackets trailed 51-32 to end the first half.

South Cobb continued to have the hot hand coming out of halftime as they started the half with back-to-back midrange baskets. South Cobb began to pull away in the third quarter as their lead increased to 30 points halfway through the quarter.

The Eagles never trailed during the game as they soared past the Yellow Jackets to win in a blowout fashion, 88-50. Sprayberry will look to get their revenge as both teams will meet again at South Cobb on February 9th.
