On Saturday afternoon (Jan. 9), North Cobb swept Allatoona at home in closely contested games.
First, the girls took the court.
The Allatoona girls had a 3-7 record prior to the game. Their most recent game was a loss on the road against Osborne. North Cobb entered the game 3-6, and their last game had been a road loss to Marietta.
The game opened with Allatoona’s Abby Hohl clicking from 3-point range. In the first quarter, Hohl got the Buccaneers’ offense going by hitting two out of her three attempt from deep.
While Hohl led Allatoona via her shooting prowess, North Cobb’s Dayuna Colvin powered the Warriors’ offense. Colvin scored on some nice cuts to the basket, but her passing also led to easy shots. Such was the case when Colvin found Chisom Eziomume cutting towards the basket. Eziomume caught Colvin’s pass and scored an easy layup to give the Warriors the lead as the first quarter came to a close.
In the second quarter, Allatoona wrangled the lead back. The Buccaneers took a 20-15 lead into halftime.
The third quarter saw Allatoona stretch its lead. By the end of the quarter, they had an 8-point advantage and momentum going into the final stretch.
In the fourth quarter, Allatoona struggled to get its offense going. North Cobb slowly chipped away at the Buccaneers’ lead. With 19.8 seconds left in the game, Chisom Eziomume hit a pair of free throws to cut the Warriors’ deficit to 1 point.
After Allatoona’s cold stretch continued at the other end of the court, Dayuna Colvin got the ball and was fouled. With 13.1 seconds left on the clock, Colvin needed to hit at least one of the free throws to tie the game. The first shot found the bottom of the net. The game was tied at 36. After collecting herself, she nailed the second free throw to give North Cobb its first lead since the first quarter.
Allatoona couldn’t get a shot to fall on the other end and had to foul again to extend the game. After two more made free throws, North Cobb had a 3-point lead. Allatoona only had enough time to heave a full-court shot. After missing the attempt, the final buzzer sounded with North Cobb having secured the victory.
Abbie Hohl finished with 15 points for Allatoona. She garnered significant attention from North Cobb’s defense thanks to her sharpshooting early on.
For North Cobb, Dayuna Colvin matched Hohl’s 15 points, including several assists to go with her scoring output.
As far as the boys teams, Allatoona has had a tremendous start to the season. The Buccaneers are 10-3, and they look to be a threat in their region. North Cobb was 6-8 prior to Saturday. The Warriors’ previous game was a loss to River Ridge.
The teams played recently in one of the holiday tournaments. Allatoona picked up a 58-54 victory in that game. North Cobb was on a mission to avenge that loss.
Allatoona came out of the gates hot. The Buccaneers hit their first three shots, including a 3-pointer from Isaiah Logan. Shortly after, North Cobb’s Alex Acosta, answered with three consecutive buckets of his own, giving North Cobb an early lead.
The first quarter came to a close with North Cobb leading 14-9.
The Warriors kept Allatoona at bay for much of the second quarter until the Buccaneers surged late. Allatoona’s Marshall Willingham and Kevin Taylor each hit from deep, and Isaiah Logan hit a buzzer-beating floater to bring the Buccaneers within a point going into halftime.
Allatoona carried the momentum they built at the end of the second quarter into the third quarter. Their shots were falling, and they were turning North Cobb over. North Cobb maintained their lead with the help of Josiah Gooch getting hot from the field. The Warriors carried a 36-35 lead into the final quarter.
North Cobb opened the fourth quarter on fire. A dunk by Alex Acosta capped the run and sent the crowd into a frenzy.
After the Warriors’ run, Allatoona was faced with an uphill battle for the remainder of the quarter. North Cobb was able to stifle any attempts at an Allatoona rally and hung on to secure a 5-point win.
Allatoona’s Isaiah Logan was tremendous before fouling out. He finished with 18 points for the Buccaneers. Kevin Taylor added 14 points to back up Logan.
For the Warriors, Alex Acosta led the game with 25 points. Josiah Gooch contributed 10 points to help propel North Cobb to a victory.
Both teams are slated to resume region play on Tuesday. Allatoona goes to Pope to take on the Greyhounds while North Cobb stays at home to play Harrison.
