On November 13, 2019, friends and family members of ten Pope seniors gathered in the Greyhound gym to honor and celebrate their favorite athletes who recently signed commitment letters to various colleges and universities.
Known as “signing day,” the event was kicked off by Pope Athletic Director Josh Matthews, who said, “We have 10 athletes: six baseball players, one lacrosse player, two softball players, and a volleyball player. It’s an exciting day to see our athletes achieve success on the field and to have the opportunity to go play at the college level, which is a dream for most of them. This is a fun way to recognize our excellent student-athletes at Pope High School.”
One of those athletes, Blake Redman, who is committed to play baseball of Ohio State University, said, “This day means a lot–a lot of hard work was put in–and it’s also really special because you get to see all the people you came in to high school with succeed and sign. It’s great.”
Two coaches, softball head coach Chris Turco and Jeff Rowland were also happy to see their athletes get recognized. “It’s a day to see the kids get rewarded for all their hard work and time and energy into their craft and we’re excited for them,” Rowland said. Turco pointed out that while this day is all about the kids, it’s also meaningful for the coaches: “I love to see the players get to move on to college,” he said. “It’s one of the most rewarding things for a coach to see because we know how hard these girls have worked to achieve this. It’s a really special day for us, too.”
Ava Vlkovic, who was flanked by her support team of Mom and Dad, signed her letter of commitment to play volleyball at Georgia State. Ava’s mother, Megan, gave a slightly different perspective of her daughter’s achievement: “It’s been a journey of friendship, of family, of hard work, which has not only paid off in volleyball, but also in school. Volleyball has taught Ava a tremendous amount about leadership and that being part of a team means there’s something more than just herself. We’re really excited for her.”
Congrats to all of the Pope signers. You are all champions. Great job!
