On Friday, January 8th, the Sprayberry Yellow Jackets took on the Kell Longhorns at Kell High school in a region matchup.
The Lady Longhorns came in to the game in first place in Region 6-6A while Sprayberry held the second spot making this match-up crucial for region standings.
The Lady Jackets came out with intensity the entire first quarter with #4 Flau’Jae Johnson being the main scorer and playmaker for the Jackets. The Lady Longhorns came back with responses from sophomore sensation #30 Crystal Henderson who scored most of the first quarter points. The score at the end of the first quarter was 17-12 with Sprayberry in front.
The second quarter started with aggression on defense by the Longhorns causing multiple turnovers in their favor. Though the Longhorn defense was holding strong, the offense was rocky with Henderson being the lone scorer most of the quarter. Back and forth scoring took place and lead changes were the trend with an halftime score of 35-33 with the Jackets retaining the lead.
The third quarter was much of the same with multiple lead changes and many turnovers caused by the Jackets which flustered Kell. The third quarter ended with the Longhorns up by the largest margin of the game thus far, 55-50.
Fourth quarter was a show with fouls and turnovers being a big issue for both teams. Sophomore starters #23 Jamiah Gregory and #11 Jada Green both fouled out for Kell in the fourth quarter. The mid quarter score was 63-59 with the Longhorns in the lead. Turnovers late in the game by Kell allowed the Yellow Jackets to take the victory with a final score of 70-66.
This loss gives the 5A state runner-up Kell Longhorns their third loss on the season after going 32-1 last year and moves them to second in Region 6. Their record stands at 9-3.
The win gives Sprayberry first place in Region 6 and improves their record to 9-2.
