Last night (10/28/19), the Cobb County School District crowned its first Georgia High School Association State Champion as the Pope High School Fastpitch Softball team defeated Lee Co. 6-0 to win the 6A title.
Head Coach Chris Turco, his staff, and players all did a great job while playing a nearly flawless game. Due to rain at the traditional state tournament in Columbus over the weekend the game was moved to Pope and there were at least 1,000 people in attendance. The atmosphere was electric and the team really appreciated the support and felt like it played a role in the win.
“This is one of my favorite teams I have ever coached,” Turco said. “It was an amazing season, but more importantly, we have an amazing group of girls & parent boosters. Not to mention that my coaching staff is one of the most caring, dedicated, and talented groups I could ever ask for. It was truly a team effort.”
Cobb County Schools Director of Athletics Don Baker had nothing but praise for the Pope administration in this milestone accomplishment. “Pope Athletic Director Josh Mathews, and Principal Tom Flugum did a great job creating an organized plan to best facilitate the teams, officials and fans to ensure the night ran smoothly,” Baker said. “It goes to show that Cobb County Schools are the best places to teach, lead, and play. I believe this will be the first of many high-level wins for our schools.”
