The sun had barely risen, but the gym was already alive with volleyball players eager to win one of four trophies from the annual Cobb County Tournament. Sixteen teams were spread out across the three gyms at North Cobb High School, the host for 2019. The tournament began with pool play, four teams with varying records in each of the four pools. All four teams in each pool competed against one another to determine who would advance to the gold and silver brackets for playoffs.
Some of the stand-outs in pool play were Lassiter, who has had a successful season thus far. They held their own against Hillgrove, who has a very strong defense and consistent serve receive and went on to win all three pool play matches, seating them first.
Walker also shined and won their pool, just barely defeating Pope, defending state champions, in an intense game. Outside hitter, Kaitlyn Rodriguez, dominated offensively, racking up kills. Harrison, Mt. Paran, and Allatoona all fought hard and came out in the gold bracket. It was clear that the playoffs would be very exciting games as these are some of the best volleyball teams in Georgia.
In the start of playoffs, Pope defended their state champion title against rival team Allatoona in a very close 3-set match. Pope’s strong block, led by middle blockers Ayana Rodgers and Lily Harvey, were able to defend against Georgia Southern commit Chamblee Russel, a very strong outside hitter.
Pope then went on to play Mt. Paran in the semi-finals, while Walker played Harrison at the same time to see who would advance to the championship match for gold. Pope struggled against the phenomenal defense from Mt. Paran, led by twins Angel and Bella Ferary and libero Mary Lusk. Walker beat Harrison, landing them a spot in the playoffs with Mt. Paran. After an incredible game, Walker came out on top, winning the Cobb County Tournament, with Mt. Paran taking home second place.
