The Pope Greyhounds and Kell Longhorns played in a 6A toss-up Friday night which the Greyhounds hosted.
The Longhorn offense started out unpromising with a fumble at the Pope 1-yard line after a successful drive down the field. Longhorn defense made up for the mistake with an interception by #11 Bo Benicosa on the following play to bring the offense back on the field.
Kell’s offense took care of business with a 7-yard rushing touchdown from running back sensation #22 David Mbadinga to make the score 6-0 after missing the extra point.
The Greyhounds could not get anything started offensively and were forced to punt on fourth down. The Longhorns took over on the Greyhound 36-yard line and it did not take them long to score with a passing touchdown to #15 WR Savion Riley. The extra point was good and the first quarter ended with a score of 13-0.
The first play of the second quarter was a fumble by the Greyhounds to put the Longhorns back on offense again. This drive was not pretty as #18 QB Corbin LaFrance took back-to-back sacks by #99 NG Cheikh Koita and #87 TE Patrick O’Ryan.
The Greyhounds forced the Longhorns to punt on fourth down but the Greyhounds themselves could not get past their own 27-yard line.
The following drive down the field from Kell came with multiple first downs and a 1-yard rushing touchdown from #10 RB Tyler Barrett with an extra point to make the score 20-0.
Kell scored again with a 1-yard rushing touchdown by #22 David Mbadinga to end the first half with a score of 27-0.
The second half started with a flat Kell defense that Pope capitalized on with a scoring drive. The Greyhounds scored their first touchdown of the night with a 1-yard passing touchdown. The extra point was no good, 27-6.
The Greyhounds struggled offensively and had difficulty getting to the first down marker the entire night. They could not come back from the deficit of the first half.
The Longhorns took the victory; allowing only two Greyhound touchdowns in the second half. Ultimately, the Pope defense couldn’t stop Kell’s running attack. The game ended with a score of 47-13.
The Longhorns take on the Blessed Trinity Titans next week while the Greyhounds make the short trip to Lassiter for a regional matchup with the Trojans.
