On Wednesday, January 15, 2020, the Kell Longhorn wrestlers hosted the Sprayberry Yellow Jackets for a non-conference meet. Walton was also scheduled to join, making it a tri-district match, but injuries prevented them from making the trip.
It was Senior Night and all Kell seniors were introduced, along with their parents, before what would be their final home meet.
The wrestling action began with 3 JV matches (and 1 forfeit). Each team scored a pin in the lower weight classes and current 5A 220-pound state-champ Andrew Parlato wrestled an exhibition match, since he would receive a forfeit during the varsity match.
The varsity match got underway quickly with a pin for Sprayberry’s Josh Summers at 106. It would prove to be the only points Sprayberry would put up all night in a very lopsided victory for Kell. After Parker Knor won a 2-3 decision at 113, Kell would go on to pin their next six opponents.
A very special win for second-year wrestler Chris Abel at 126 brought the crowd to their feet in a long standing ovation for the blind wrestler. Chris was able to secure the quarter-nelson he had been working all match to finally pin his opponent in the third period.
Andruw Reyes wrestled to a 2-14 major decision at 160 and the remaining five matches consisted of three forfeits along with two pins at 182 (Hunter Kresge) and 195 (Fernando Hogan). The final score was 6-73. Neither team will be participating in the team dual state meets in Macon. They will begin preparations for the individual state matches.
