Hillgrove’s gymnasium was loud and proud today as they celebrated the Hawks’ Girls Cross Country state championship, won on November 2, 2019 at Carrollton High School (see previous article here).
The entire student body gathered in the gym to celebrate the Girls XC accomplishment, which was Hillgrove’s first ever GHSA team state championship. State runner-up in 7A XC, Noah Hayes, was introduced first in recognition of the impressive season also had by the Boys XC team.
But it was the Girls who brought everyone together: Grace Ellsworth, Ava Brooks, Sierra Wehrenberg, Lizzy Smith, Royal Delay, Elizabeth Ellis, and Reese Connelly. Their championship was historic and symbolic of everything they worked for this season, which began many months ago, in the hot and humid days of summer.
Coach Jonathan Gambrell said: “I am so proud of the girls and our coaching staff and the work they have put in to accomplish this goal. Winning in the highest classification is not easy and it truly takes a team effort. In our program we try to focus on the process rather than the outcome. We focus on showing up consistently every day and putting in the work, and these girls have done just that. Winning the first state championship in program history is a huge deal for us but even bigger is winning the first team state championship in our school’s history. Doing something that has never been done is always difficult but these girls have demonstrated that you can truly accomplish much more when working together than when working alone.”
Principal Angela Stewart was also overjoyed about the accomplishment: “The entire Hillgrove Staff and Student Body honored our GHSA Cross Country State Champions today! It was electric! The band, the Cheerleaders including Crimson Pride, and all Cross Country Students paved the way for the awesome celebration. I am so proud of our students!”
Way to go XC Girls and Hillgrove Hawks! We know this is the first of many state championships!
