On a chilly, December 21st morning, while most high school students were sleeping in and enjoying their first day of holiday break, some of the county’s best swim teams gathered at the pool, preparing to be put to the ultimate test to see who would hold the title of Division 1’s best team until the county meet later this season.
The Kennesaw Mountain Mustangs, Pope Greyhounds, Walton Raiders, Campbell Spartans, and Lassiter Trojans each warmed up separately, ready to leave everything in the pool for the upcoming meet. The meet began with a win in the 200-yard medley relay for the Mustang boys, with a time of 1:39.55 consisting of Ben McClain, Connor Haigh, Brett Reason, and Zach Lowe. In the first girls event, Lindsey Johnson of the Lassiter Trojans just barely out-touched Campbell’s Allison Darmon by .64 seconds in the last leg of the 200 yard medley, giving the Trojans an early lead.
The meet continued with many competitors giving their all in the water, trying to will their team to a victory. As parents and spectators continued to file in the aquatic center, they could be heard cheering all throughout the building.
A little less than halfway through the meet, the diving competition had begun as each athlete would twist and turn in the air, hoping to wow the judges. Mustang diver Braden Hester would go on to win the boys meet with a score of 260.75. Pope’s Eli Lubell would finish in second with a score of 241.30, and Walton’s Tyler Hoard would come in third with a score of 222. As for the girls diving, Campbell’s Rhylie Turner would finish first with 182.30. In second was Kennesaw’s Lexie Fuson with a score of 166.05, and very close behind was Campbell’s Ann Davis with 164.45.
As the final neared and the meet came to a close, none of the 5 teams was sure who would come out victorious. Following an intense 400 free relay in events 23 and 24, the teams patiently awaited their results.
The P.A. Announcer came on the mic and first announced the scores for the boys: In fifth, the Lassiter Trojans with 277 points. In fourth, the Campbell Spartans with 344 points. The top three teams were separated by only 13 points. In third, with 538 points, the Pope Greyhounds. Kennesaw Mountain finished second with 540 points, leaving the Walton Raider’s boys team victorious with 551 points.
Next, the girls scores were announced. The Mustangs came in 5th with 262 points, the Greyhounds in 4th with 321 points, and the Spartans in 3rd with 438 points. Lassiter came in second with 570 points, and Walton finished in first with 646 points. That left the combined team scores. The result of Cobb’s Division 1 meet was as follows:
- Walton – 1197
- Pope – 859
- Lassiter – 847
- Kennesaw Mountain – 802
- Campbell – 782
Each team will look to improve over the next month in the 2nd half of the season as they prepare for the road ahead, on a collision course for another meeting at the county meet in late January.
