On Friday, November 1, 2019 the best long-distance runners in 6A converged on Carrollton High School for one last race of the year. There was a chill in the air, but other than that the weather was just right: sunny and dry with low humidity.
The boys ran first, starting their race at 10:30 AM. Cobb County was well represented with runners from Allatoona, Harrison, and Pope. Sully Shelton (Harrison) left the rest of the field in the dust with a blistering pace and a final time of 16:11.41. Cole Heron and Will Brown (Pope) took third and fourth respectively with a photo finish. Heron’s time was 16:37.10, while Brown’s was 16:37.13. A mere 3/100ths of a second separated them! These teammates really know how to bring out the competitive spirit in each other. Noah Connelly (Harrison) finished seventh with a time of 16:48.32. KC Heron (Pope) finished eighth with a time of 16:50.89, and Kaden McVey (Harrison) took ninth with a time of 16:51.28.
The girls ran their race at 11:15. Cobb was again represented by Allatoona, Harrison, and Pope. Kelsey Grass (Allatoona) finished in eighth place with a time of 19:57.66. Anna Windom (Harrison) took tenth with a time of 20:06.67. The Pope competitive spirit was also alive and well for the girls with a trio of Pope runners taking twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth. Charlotte Dunn finished in 20:12.50, Sophie Boice finished close behind with 20:13.76, and Lorel Golden finished with a time of 20:17.09.
Cobb County also represented well in the overall team standings. Harrison won the boys team score with a final tally of 52 points, while Pope was close behind in second with 56 points; Allatoona finished ninth. For the girls, Allatoona took second overall with 114 points, while Pope was right on their heels in third with 116 points; Harrison finished sixth.
To see all standings and scoring go here. Great job to all Cobb County distance runners! Congratulations on a great season… see you next year.
