On Saturday, January 4, 2019, Pope hosted the 4th Annual Greyhound Invitational swim meet at Mountain View Aquatic Center. This meet hosted 14 teams from all over the Atlanta area, including five of Cobb’s very own. Swimmers began to warm up around 1:30, preparing for the races ahead of them. The aquatic center was filled with hundreds of swimmers, parents, and coaches all excited to watch the upcoming meet.
Each team met briefly with coaches discussing what they wanted to see from their athletes in the water, hoping to will their team to a victory. The meet began with the boys 200-yard medley relay, kicking off a long day of swimming ahead. Throughout the afternoon, swimmers gave their all in the water during their races. When they weren’t busy racing, they could be found cheering their teammates on.
After a long four hours of swimming, the final race had concluded and teams awaited results anxiously. All five of Cobb’s teams had strong showings, and the standings represented that with 4 out of the top 5 teams representing Cobb county. Finishing in 8th place, with 398.5 points, were the Kell Longhorns. In 5th, with 494 points, the Allatoona Bucs. In 4th, with 540, the North Cobb Warriors. In 2nd, with 867 points, the Kennesaw Mountain Mustangs. And taking home the first place trophy, the Pope Greyhounds with 1,079.5 points.
Each team will not only look to build on their results from this weekend and use them as momentum for the remainder of the season, but will be ready to dethrone Pope at next year’s Greyhound Invitational.
