The last of the makeup games from the weather delays on Friday night (9/13/19) was played in Marietta on Monday evening (9/16) at Osborne High School, where the Cardinals hosted the Creekview Grizzlies.
Although the turnout for both teams was unsurprisingly slim, the fans that did show were the loyal ones and came prepared to cheer on their team. The game picked up where it left off on Friday, with a little over 10 minutes left in the first quarter and a score of 0-0.
The Grizzlies struck first, and second, and third. Going into the halftime break, the Cardinals had little to be happy about. The Grizzlies took a 27-0 lead into the locker room with two quarters left to play.
Despite a four-possession deficit, the Cardinals came out for the third quarter strangely optimistic and energetic. It took nearly the entire third quarter, which was riddled with penalties for both teams, for the Cardinals to get on the board, but score they did. They avoided the dreaded shutout and ended the third quarter with a score of 46-7 (the same score as the 2018 final).
Although Creekview should have been coasting in the fourth quarter, they made a couple of mistakes that the Cardinals capitalized on to put even more points on the board. And an offensive switch that moved the QB to running back reinvigorated the Cardinal offense, which allowed them to put up 14 more points before the final whistle. Although it was still a loss, the Cardinals played hard through all four quarters and didn’t give up. The contest ended with a final score of 46-21.
Keep your heads up, Cardinals. There’s a win in your near future…
