Positive Athlete (PA) is an Atlanta-based organization that recognizes athletes and schools that are “making positivity cool.” Fronted by spokesman and Atlanta-native, Hines Ward, PA has awarded more than $350K in scholarships in its seven-year existence. PA recently announced their 2019-2020 school year winners and Cobb County School District was well-represented.
24 athletes in Cobb Schools were recognized as “Positive Athletes.” PA defines a Positive Athlete as one who has “overcome difficult circumstances, given back to their schools and communities in a significant way, or just have an infectious positive attitude that makes everyone around them a better person.” Every high school in the Cobb County School District with a sports program had at least one athlete named as Most Positive in their sport.
Cobb County’s Director of Athletics, Don Baker, was proud of this accomplishment. “Every school was represented,” he said, “and this is a reflection on the communities that make up our district. Our schools are truly ‘One Team’ that collectively focuses on the success of our student-athletes both on and off their respective playing fields.”
North Cobb head football coach Shane Queen was named as Most Positive Boys Coach, and Pope tennis coach Shannon Woodson was named Most Positive Girls Coach.
Allatoona High School had three students named as Most Positive, in addition to the school being named as the Most Positive School in the county. Allatoona Athletic Director Amie Howard was overwhelmed by the award. Ms. Howard’s family lost their youngest son early in the school year and it has been a very emotional time for them.
“When I read the announcement, I cried,” she said. “I can’t think of a more deserving school than Allatoona this year on a personal basis, just because of how much they did for me, and are still doing for me after our loss. I am so happy and proud that others are getting to see it as well. In a culture that likes to critique athletics and coaches, Allatoona should be recognized for doing what is right, just like so many others.”
Allatoona Principal Candace Wilkes also viewed the award as a confirmation of everything they are trying to do at the school. “I want the community to view our school as a positive place. Our school’s motto is ‘Anchored in Excellence,’ and we want to be excellent in all areas: academics, athletics, and the arts. The kids and the community have risen to that vision of excellence and I couldn’t be happier to be a Buccaneer.”
Congratulations to all Positive Athlete winners from Cobb County School District. We are very proud of you and know you will continue to spread positivity everywhere you go!
