This Saturday (11/2/19), there will be three Cobb County High School Volleyball programs looking for a state championship: Allatoona competing for the 6A title, and Lassiter and Walton competing for 7A. Allatoona plays Sequoyah at 4PM and Lassiter and Walton square off at 6:30 PM. The games will be played at Marietta High School.
Allatoona’s head coach, Joseph Soley, said he is “very excited to be back playing for a state championship.” As well he should be with powerhouse seniors on the court like Annie Smith, Chamblee Russell, Callie Miller, Savannah Keener, Joanie Cox, and Lily Brody. But this Buc team is also balanced with underclassmen, including juniors Sophie Anderson and O’Niece Roberts and freshman starter Gracie Pynes. As for his supporting cast, Coach Soley had praise for all: “Allatoona is a great place to teach and coach and the fans are the best because they travel everywhere. And my assistant coach, Matthew Kempf, is the team angel. The players all love him; he is so encouraging.” Regardless of the outcome on Saturday, Coach Soley said he is a “very proud coach.”
Perennial championship competitor Walton will have their hands full with Coach Greg Hodges’ Lassiter Trojans. “There’s respect on both ends,” Hodges said. “I think Suzanne (Fitzgerald, Walton Head Coach) respects us, and we obviously respect her and what she has done.” And what Suzanne has done is turn out championship team after championship team in her 14-year tenure as Walton head coach. “We are going to have to play a complete game to beat them,” Coach Hodges admitted, “but they’re mortal and we can hit it in all places. To beat a team like Walton, you need depth and balance, and we have that with our current team. They’re a solid team, no doubt, but I like my chances.”
Both of these matchups promise to be exciting and competitive. Make sure to mark your calendar for this evening of Cobb County state championship volleyball. Don’t miss it.
