On Saturday, January 11, 2020, North Cobb High School hosted the wrestling team duals for Region 3-7A. Representing Cobb County School District was Hillgrove, Kennesaw Mountain, McEachern, and North Cobb. In addition, Marietta and North Paulding also participated.
The North Cobb gym featured two mats with two meets happening at once most of the day. In the first round, Kennesaw Mountain (#5) took on North Cobb (#4), and Marietta (#3) had Hillgrove (#6). North Paulding and McEachern both received a first round bye, since they were the #1 and #2 seeds, respectively. Kennesaw Mountain and Marietta both moved on the semifinal round, while North Cobb and Hillgrove moved to the consolation matches.
The semifinal round pitted North Paulding against Kennesaw Mountain, and Marietta against McEachern. North Paulding beat Kennesaw, and McEachern beat Marietta. In the consolation round, Marietta beat North Cobb, and Hillgrove beat Kennesaw Mountain. The concluding matches would be North Paulding facing off against McEachern in the first place match, and Marietta taking on Hillgrove for third place.
Thanks to strong showings in the upper weights, McEachern was able to set the tone early and hold off first-seeded North Paulding to win the match, and the tournament, 38-36. And with two must-have pins in the final two matches, Hillgrove was able to edge out Marietta, winning 39-38. Hillgrove’s win forced a true-second match, since Hillgrove and North Pauling had not faced each other all day.
Despite being the only team to wrestle four times on the day, Hillgrove gave North Paulding a tough match. It came down to the wire, but North Paulding was able to hold on to the victory, winning the match 41-35. This secured North Paulding’s place as the runner-up of the tournament. McEachern and North Paulding will represent Region 3-7A at the state tournament, January 16-18.
